Friday night football games are typically filled with the sound of cheering fans, pumped up players and mingling students. But this past Friday hit a sour note for the Cairo, Georgia High School Band when its band director John Folsom Jr. found himself charged with battery on an officer.

"You have an individual that acted in a distasteful manner in public in front of a number of his own students, a number of Dougherty County students and other spectators and then to take it one step further he physically grabbed a police officer," Dougherty County (GA) Police Chief Troy L. Conley said.

In a report released by Dougherty School Police, Folsom and two assistants tried entering Hugh Mills Stadium through the North Gate Friday without following proper stadium procedure.

An officer and a ticket taker directed the three to move to one side until a head count was taken for the bandmembers.

The report says Folsom began yelling "y'all don't count the football coaches" then told his two assistants to go ahead and enter the stadium, which they did. School police officer Crawford called for the two assistants to come back to the gate at which time Folsom grabbed an officer by his right forearm in an aggressive manner and told him "no they can go in." Officer Crawford used the same forearm to push Folsom away. Another officer grabbed Folsom from behind by his left arm and right shoulders and identified himself as Officer Crawford's supervisor.

The report says Folsom continuted to yell "y'all don't count the football coaches," and was placed in handcuffs and transported to Dougherty Co. Jail where he was charged with simple battery.

Band parents in Cairo say they couldn't believe their eyes at what they saw next.

"The way I would describe it is complete shock. I could understand if maybe some other people I know were being arrested but not Johnny Folsom," band parent Sam Carnline said.

11th grader Zach Coons plays trumpet for the Cairo Band.

"The security would not let the band in so Mr. Folsom put his hand out to let the assistant in and they took him right there and arrested him right in front of us," Coons said.

"It was really sad a lot of people started crying but we all hung in and told each other that night we had to play for Folsom."

Police Chief Conley says the charge will not be dropped against Folsom.
