Reducing Tobacco Sales To Minors

The North Carolina Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement has officially introduced a new initiative to nine counties in the east to keep tobacco out of the hands of minors. The Red Flag campaign started in 2005 to prevent illegal sales of tobacco products to minors, and was introduced to our area Thursday. With the use of the color coded driver's licenses in our state, a person under the age of 18, would have a red border around their photo. Merchants who ask to see a license could quickly see if that person is of age or not. If a clerk is caught selling tobacco products to minors they could be fined $1,000 and serve 30 days of community service.
