Four men have been sentenced to prison for their parts in the shooting death of an Elizabeth City State University student nearly three years ago.
Tornando Laron Simpson was sentenced to a minimum of 11 years in
prison. Carl Dennis Scales Jr. and Robert Austin Hall were both
sentenced to a minimum of nine years and six months. Markie Jowan
Riddick was sentenced to a minimum of seven years and 10 months.
All four had earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Sentencing was based on prior records and circumstances of the crime.
Brian Jarrod Pender of Tarboro, age 21, was shot and killed March 1, 2004, after a group of men broke into his Elizabeth City rental home. His two roommates were left unharmed.
In September, Kyle Jaron Bunch was convicted of first-degree murder in Pender's death and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
