Easley Wants More NC Lottery Sales For Prizes To Boost Education

Governor Easley is betting that giving lottery players a better chance at winning will also help education strike it rich in North Carolina.

Easley said yesterday he wants to shift more ticket revenues toward prizes in hopes of boosting tepid instant ticket sales.

It's a risky decision that he and the lottery's top executive believe will generate more education money for North Carolina. That's even though a smaller percentage of sales ultimately will be earmarked for education initiatives.

First-year sales are expected to fall 200 million dollars short of the lottery's original projection of one-point-two billion dollars. Under his new plan, Easley believes lottery proceeds will generate one-point-five billion dollars in sales
for the 12-month period starting July first.
