Officials say a pharmaceutical executive and his wife have committed 50 million dollars to U-N-C Chapel Hill in the single largest donation ever to the School of Public Health.
School officials said that tThe donation puts the university's fundraising campaign, Carolina First, just ahead of its two billion dollar goal. The school will be renamed the Dennis and Joan Gillings School of Global Public Health in honor of the donors.
Dennis Gillings is chairman and C-E-O of Quintiles Transnational, a pharmaceutical services company based in Research Triangle Park. Joan Gillings has worked at U-N-C's School of Public Health and has had a career in commercial real estate.
The Carolina First campaign ends in December. It aims to raise private money to support UNC Chapel Hill's vision to become the nation's leading public university.
