Shark bites have killed just four people in North Carolina since 1935, the latest a Pittsburgh man who was swimming off the coast in Corolla Saturday night.
Wendy Arey-Kent, an educator at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores says during that same time period there have been just 32 confirmed shark bites in the state.
Kent says sharks are not out to bite humans. She said most shark deaths are caused by blood loss when the bite severs a major artery.
Kent says there are 35 species of sharks off the North Carolina coast.
Kent says you should not swim in the ocean before dawn or after dusk when sharks are feeding on bait fish. She also warns not to wear shiny objects that can be mistaken for fish scales, don't swim alone and never swim where currents converge.
Onslow and New Hanover counties have had the most shark attacks with eight each, followed by five attacks in Carteret and Dare counties and one each in Currituck and Hyde counties.

There is no such species as the "sandpiper" shark. You probably mean sandtiger. Regardless, sandtigers are not exactly the largest species in NC waters. Tiger sharks, great hammerheads, and bull sharks (to name a few) get to sizes as big or bigger than sandtigers.
