A former House speaker says the crime committed by successor Jim Black has quote- "tarnished everyone in North Carolina" and will take a while for the public to get over it.
Joe Mavretic is a Democrat who served as speaker in 1989 and 1990. He says Black abused the legislative process by accepting thousands of dollars in cash from chiropractors while pushing their legislative agenda between 2002 and 2005.
The news has prompted several critics of Black and reform groups to push for additional changes to North Carolina's ethics and anti-corruption laws. Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger wants to file a bill this coming week that would bar convicted lawmakers from receiving their legislative pensions.
