The state Highway Patrol says two people are dead in a fiery tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 85 north of Durham.
Three trucks were involved in the wreck on southbound I-85 in Granville County near Butner.
Patrol spokesman Lieutenant Everett Clendenin says two of the trucks caught fire, but there was no release of hazardous materials. Smoldering debris littered the interstate, and southbound traffic backed up for miles.
Television footage showed firefighters hosing down the burned-out trucks more than an hour after the crash, which happened shortly before 10 a-m.
At least one medical helicopter landed on the interstate to evacuate the injured.
