An illegal immigrant is charged with second-degree murder after leading police on a pursuit, then crashing into a car and killing a pregnant 20-year-old woman.
Federal investigators say Carlos Alfonso Guillen Martinez is in the U-S illegally from El Salvador. He was placed in jail on Wednesday.
On February 6th, police began following a red Jeep driven by Martinez in Kannapolis after noticing that it was weaving and had crossed the center line of the road. They continued following the vehicle to Landis, where it struck a car driven by Leanna Newman of Salisbury.
Newman's car flipped several times after being hit. Her 1-year-old daughter was a passenger in the car and was not injured.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents learned Wednesday that Guillen Martinez was from El Salvador and had been deported in 1997 and 1998. If convicted, he would be deported immediately after he finishes serving prison time.
