He served our country with three tours in Iraq and was severely injured the second time, nearly losing his foot after being hit by and improvised explosive device.
After months of surgeries and rehabilitation, 29-year-old Corporal Wesam Mahmoud, who served at Camp Lejeune and now resides in Jacksonville, was awarded two Purple Hearts.
However, that's not all he did. Wesam also used the time recovering in the combat zone in Iraq, and here at home, to earn his masters degree online from Capella University, which led to another adventure.
Wesam was working on the web one day when something caught his eye. He noticed they were looking for three students to run the 2007 Antarctica Marathon. Even with an injured foot shattered by an explosive, Wesam applied and was picked.
Wesam will run the marathon in bitter cold Antarctica on February 28th. You can follow his progress by clicking on the following link: http://www.capella-id.com/wesam/.
