Greenville Store Sells $56.5 Million Jackpot Ticket

GREENVILLE, NC -- We now know where a ticket worth $56.5 million was sold in Greenville.

Late Monday afternoon, lottery officials provided information about what the store can expect and the status of the winner.

According to the lottery, one of two perfect tickets in Friday's $113 Mega Millions jackpot was sold at the Kangaroo Express at 1531 SE Greenville Boulevard.

The winner has not come forward yet. He or she has 180 days to claim the win.

Lottery officials report the store itself can receive up to $50,000 in what is called "incentive pay" for the enormous win.

One of two "perfect" winning lottery tickets for an estimated $56.5 million Mega Millions jackpot was sold in Greenville, North Carolina.

The North Carolina Education Lottery reports two "perfect" Mega Millions tickets were sold, one in Greenville, North Carolina and one in California.

The tickets were for the drawing on Friday, September 30. Lottery drawings air nightly on WITN.

Lottery officials say they hope to announce the store where the ticket was sold this week and say they are hopeful they will have news about the winner or winners as well. The winner has 180 days to come forward.

The release from the lottery is below.

"For the fifth time in five and half years, a multi-million dollar jackpot-winning ticket has been sold in North Carolina. Someone bought a Mega Millions ticket in Greenville that matched all five white balls and the Mega Ball in the Friday, September 30 drawing to split the jackpot with another “perfect ticket” sold in California.

The estimated jackpot for the drawing was $113 million, making each ticket worth an estimated $56.5 million. It is the first time a jackpot-winning ticket sold in North Carolina has split a jackpot prize.

As with all winning tickets for draw games, the jackpot-winning ticketholder should sign the ticket immediately to establish ownership. Although we would love to meet the winner soon, he, she or they have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the prize. If a jackpot winner is reading this, we would love a phone call before you head to HQ to begin the claim process!

Friday’s “big ticket” represents the second Mega Millions jackpot ticket ever sold in our state, to go with three Powerball jackpot tickets. Just four months after Mega Millions tickets went on sale in North Carolina, Mike Manheim of Greensboro won a $12 million jackpot in the May 28, 2010 drawing. North Carolina’s three Powerball jackpot winners are Jackie Alston of Halifax, who won $74.5 million in November 2006; Jeff Wilson of Kings Mountain, who won $88.1 million in June 2009; and Frank Griffin of Asheville, who won $141.4 million in February 2010.

We expect to be able to announce the store where the winning ticket was sold early next week and look forward to sharing more details with you soon – hopefully including who the winner or winners are!"
