While temperatures around Eastern Carolina continue to dip, the sales of portable heaters continue to rise, that's according to local retailers. Employees at the Home Depot in Winterville say they have nearly sold out of their portable heaters. They say the recent cold snap has customers grabbing all kinds of heaters, from kerosene to electric. However, Gary Coggins with Greenville Fire and Rescue says people need to be extra careful with in-home heaters. He says heaters are one of the leading causes of home fires nation wide. Fire officials say people should look for heaters with an automatic tip-over shut off device. They also say individuals should never leave a heater on while sleeping.
