A political ally of former House Speaker
Jim Black reached a plea deal with prosecutors Tuesday.
M. Scott Edwards agreed to be sentenced for felony obstruction
of justice in exchange for not going to jail.
Prosecutors had charged Edwards with four counts of perjury.
They accused him with lying on campaign finance reports filed while
he was treasurer of the North Carolina State Optometric Society's
Political Action Committee in 2002 and 2003.
The group gave campaign money to Black, a Charlotte-area
optometrist, and other legislators.
Edwards, who's from Murfreesboro, faced up to nearly seven years
in prison if he had been convicted on all four counts.
