A 21-year-old soldier based at Fort Bragg was killed in Iraq this week.
The Department of Defense says Sergeant William M- Sigua of Los Altos Hills, California, died Wednesday of wounds he suffered when his unit came in contact with small arms enemy fire. It happened during combat operations in Bayji, Iraq.
Sigua served as an infantry squad leader with the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
Sigua joined the Army in July 2003 and reported to Fort Bragg in March 2004. He deployed to Afghanistan in September 2004 and to Iraq in August.
Sigua's mother Jackie says her son recently established a relationship with a 5th grade class at Santa Rita Elementary School in Los Altos. She says he exchanged mail with the children and talked about what he was doing in Iraq.
