Police say a 36-year-old Rocky Mount woman left her two young children alone in a car for nearly an hour in freezing temperatures Wednesday afternoon.
Darcelle Torraine Hunter-Baisden of Rocky Mount is charged with two counts each of misdemeanor child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a child.
Authorities say eyewitnesses spotted the children alone in the car outside the Food Lion on Gold Rock Road. Police said the children were cold and visibly upset when they arrived on scene.
The children, an 8-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy were not injured, but the older child was taken to Nash General Hospital as a precaution. Investigators say the girl apparently suffered an asthma attack while waiting in the car for her mother to return.
Last November another Rocky Mount mother was charged with misdemeanor child abuse after leaving her child in the back seat of a running car while she went inside a convenience store. The car was stolen with the child in it and later recovered in Richmond with the child unharmed.
