Man Charged In High School Student's Shooting Death

Police in Statesville have charged a 39-year-old man in the shooting death of a 17-year-old Statesville High School student during a large gathering at the man's home.

\Officers found Shannon Lackey dead of a gunshot wound to his stomach in the living room of the man's home shortly before 8 p-m Monday.

Kevin Turner is in the Iredell County jail without bond after police arrested and charged him with one count each of murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Assistant Chief Tom Anderson says Turner told police he shot Lackey after Lackey broke into his south Statesville home and tried to rob him. Anderson says the evidence doesn't support that claim, and police filed charges after consulting with the Iredell County District Attorney's Office.

Another person was shot in the leg and was treated and released from a local hospital.
