ECU And Company Strive For A Million Meals
ECU Volunteer and Service-Learning Center students along with hundreds from around Eastern Carolina team up with Stop The Hunger to help bag up a Million Meals to send overseas.

Stopping the hunger was the aim of hundreds from around eastern carolina as they did their part to help package a million meals.
The event took place just before 9AM Saturday at the Boys And Girls Club on West Fire Tower Road in Greenville.
The event was put on by the ECU Volunteer and Service-Learning Center and Stop The Hunger organization.
Volunteers gathered together in an assembly line fashion bagging up things like rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables.
Organizers say the meals have a serving size of six and cost 25 cents to make.
Last year ECU students and the community packaged 201,108 meals at their branch alone.
Other schools which took part were NC State, UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Wilmington. Chapel Hill and Wilmington do their event on August 29th.
Volunteers worked in three shifts of about 250 people per shift.
To keep things lively organizers had an Emcee and a gong was hit every time five-thousand meals were packaged and loaded onto the truck.
Last year a total of 1,010,374 meals were packaged and sent out from all the participating schools.

I appreciate the opinions and hope those who are criticizing also are doing something to help their community. My experience is those who complain the most do the least. There are hungry here but also many safety nets-social serivces, food banks, soup kitchens, churches. The Food Bank alone distributed millions of pounds of food in Eastern NC the past two years. When did you last read of a death due to hunger here?-go to Africa or Haiti and you have a story in about 4 seconds. These meals do not feed warlords or armies but dying women and children. Partners are credible and accountable for stewardship of the meals receive. They provide education, job training, resource stewardship, and hope. And, yes, in a way the meals are a type of birth control. When used as school lunches, female attendance increases and when girls stay in school, they have fewer children. We can't all serve the same needs. Choose whom you will serve,do it well and respect those who choose differently.
Cindi is right. We should help those in our community first, that is how I donate my time/money. These "overseas meals" probably wind up feeding Afghan warlords. Alot of the food and money aid sent Africa ends up helping folks riding around in the back of trucks with machine guns. Someone needs to help these blind do-gooders adn show them all the charity opportunities in Eastern North Carolina.
Yes there are people here who need help; however, are you also aware that every 6 seconds someone dies from starvation? How often does someone in Eastern NC die due to starvation? I have noticed that we seem to have the opposite problem here though. How many in Eastern North Carolina die due to the effects of obesity?
