Governor Beverly Perdue has appointed Wayland James Sermons, Jr. to the Superior Court District 2 for Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell, and Washington counties.

Sermons will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge William C. Griffin, Jr.

Perdue said, "Wayland Sermons' broad career experience in law and his commitment to his community have prepared him well for this position. I am confident he will serve the people of the 2nd Judicial District with distinction."

Sermons has been in private practice since 1980 in Beaufort County. He is currently serving as town attorney for the towns of Bath and Chocowinity. He has been an approved Capital Defender by the Office of Indigent Defense Services since 2000.

The word was out for several years that Griffin would not retire until he could arrange for Sermons to be his successor. We don't need judges handpicking their successors, especially a judge as arrogant as Griffin. Easley would not allow Griffin to put his handpicked choice in, but ''Dumpling'' Purdue (seriously that is the nickname that Basnight and the boys hung on her in the Senate) did. There have been some highly qualified people who have been mentioned over the years for this seat including District Court Judges Mike Paul and Chris McLendon, and DA Seth Edwards. I wonder how many of them will end up running next year. All of them are better known than Sermons. It is good to have Griffin gone, but it is still an open question who will hold this seat after the next election. It could be an interesting campaign. Griffin's role in the lawsuit by the school board against the taxpayers of the county was revolting.

If Wayland does half as good as a judge as he did as a defense attorney, he will be great. Seth Edwards is a commendable young man and we are lucky to have him as our DA. If i'm ever charged with an offense and Tom Anglim is the ADA, i'll fire my defense attorney and plead, because i'm probably going to jail. He is good.

I have known Mr. Sermons, Should I say Judge Sermons, for many years. I know him to be an excellent attorney and I know he will be a great Judge. I have also known Judge Griffin for along time and wish him the best in his retirement. There are several Judges who were attorneys before they became a Judge. I see no problem with that. They know what it is like to be on both sides. I also know Mr. Edwards and feel that he is doing a good job as the head District Attorney.
