NC Catholics Urged To Oppose Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Leaders of North Carolina's two Roman Catholics dioceses say they will oppose state legislation that would set aside money for research on embryonic stem cells.

Bishops Peter Jugis of the Charlotte diocese and Michael Burbidge of the Raleigh dioceses have written to their churches across the state. The letters direct priests to educate parishioners about the faith's opposition to such research.

The bishops say the procedure would destroy innocent human life.

Supporters of embryonic stem cell research contend it shows promise for developing potential treatments or cures for dozens of diseases.
