A Halifax County man recently elected to the state House has been selected to replace Democratic Senator Robert Holloman.
A Democratic Party committee yesterday recommended Representative Edward Jones of Enfield to fill the vacancy. The committee's recommendation now goes to Governor Easley's office for approval.
The new session of the General Assembly begins Wednesday.
Jones, who received 448 of the 527 votes cast by 14 committee delegates, would represent the 4th Senatorial District, which includes Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Northampton and Perquimans counties.
Jones, a former state trooper and mayor of Enfield, was appointed to the House in 2005 and elected in November.
Holloman, who was pastor at Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, died at his home on January 8th at age 53 after what his office called a short illness.
