Home-schooling has hit a record popularity in North Carolina.

More than 41,000 families taught their children at home last school year. That's the highest number in the 23 years state officials have kept records.

The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday that Wake County leads the state, with about 3,700 registered home schools teaching an estimated 7,500 students. A state report released Monday shows Mecklenburg in second, with just under 3,000 schools and about 6,300 students.

All 100 North Carolina counties had home-schoolers, with just over 77,000 children participating. That's up from about 71,600 the previous year.

Home-schoolers from across North and South Carolina meet next week in Charlotte for an annual conference.

Homeschooling has a dark side as well. Not all of the parents are as dedicated as they may want you to think, for instance: Andrea Yates, Brice and Sandra McMillan, Josef Fritzl, David Koresh, Nissa and Kent Warren, David Ludwig, Kara Borden, Deanna Laney, Lynn Paddock, Banita Jacks, Donald and Lisa Boss, Thomas Lavery, Neil and Christy Edgar I can't imagine what would happen if we started giving vouchers, encouraging people like this to homeschool.

If your watch Jeopardy kids night most of the kids are homeschooled. They can answer questions most of us have never heard of. I admire homeschool moms. The kids are better behaved too.

well, she (Nancy) most should apologize to you too Mandy. Home school kids appear to be well rounded along with kids from private schools.
