Pfiesteria is an organism scientists say killed millions of fish in Eastern North Carolina throughout the 1990s. Joann Burkholder with N.C. State, one of the leading researchers on this organism, fell under heavy criticism for calling pfiesteria toxic. A research paper published this past December by Peter Moeller with N.O.A.A. validates Burkholders claim and goes as far as identifying a specific toxin. For environmentalists that supported Burkholder all along, this is great news. These findings from N.O.A.A. are the culmination of seven years of in-lab and on-site research.
