More State Prisons Go Tobacco-Free
Prisons here in Eastern Carolina that are now smoke-free include Craven, Duplin, Eastern, Fountain, Greene, Maury, Nash, Neuse, Odom, Pamlico, Pasquotank and Wayne.

If you're planning to visit a state prison in North Carolina make sure you leave your cigarettes in the car.
Today 26 more state prisons go tobacco-free. That's for staff, inmates and visitors.
Prisons here in Eastern Carolina that are now smoke-free include Craven, Eastern, Fountain, Greene, Maury, Nash, Neuse, Odom, Pamlico, Pasquotank and Wayne.
Duplin was one of five state prisons that went smoke-free in a pilot project last year.
The Department of Correction says there is no time frame yet on when the rest of the prisons will do the same.
The D.O.C. says it is working to establish cessation training for employees and inmates.

To respond to the land of the free, I agree with you, but only need remind you that prisoners are no longer free because they made a choice, and I am not someone who cares about being inprisoned, family of mine has been to DOC, all I am saying is why that is a bad agrugement. I agree that it should still be aloud if the people want to smoke anywhere. I say if you want to smoke then smoke, and for the record I am a non smoker.

for those of you who agree with letting the government take away tobacco you are a bunch of idiots. whats next? your coffee? candy? soft drinks? yea keep agreeing with them and see where we end up. so much for the land of the free.....

Hey y'all I work for the state of OH in corrections, and they instituted this policy as of March 1, 2009 for all State buildings including all 42 prisons! Not many problems because there are smoking cessation classes offered and other aids. The only major increase we see is an increase in inmates that have tried to hide smokes & chew, which results in more inmates being sent to the "hole". Staff is doing much better, and the majority see it as a health benefit for the inmates as well as staff. It really is not that big of a deal. It's how you handle life's challenges.
