Construction, Budget Cuts Create Problems For Ferries

Two construction projects are adding up to one big problem for people who rely on a ferry to get to and from work.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says people driving to the Cedar Island Ferry terminal in coastal Carteret County will run into construction on both major arteries to the ferry docks. Officials say sewer lines are being installed along the side of U.S. 70 between Beaufort and North River. There is also repaving on N.C. 101 between Havelock and Beaufort. Both of these roads take ferry travelers to Cedar Island.

Drivers are cautioned to leave 30 to 60 minutes earlier than normal.

Meanwhile, budget cuts are part of the reason some other ferry passengers should get used to delays. Officials say they have deleted some runs on all ferry routes, including Hatteras to Ocracoke. Complicating the matter is a Coast Guard rule which limits workers to 12-hour shifts, though that's ultimately for everyone's safety. Ferry officials say expect delays at the Hatteras to Ocracoke run.

You can say anything you like about the Ferry employees. They are all very nice and helpful. They have a thankless job. I think they are great and probably the most forgotten state employees. Thanks, girls and guys for your work.

What is there to spend money on in SQ? I stopped at the little convient mart before leaving SQ and besides being a dump, carried almost no food or snacks.

How do you figure SQ run aren't affected? only running 2 round trips instead of 4 and throttled back to save fuel and take longer. You must not ride much SQ benefits.
