Authorities hope an autopsy can help them with the fatal shooting of a Lincoln County sheriff's deputy whose body was found in her home in Iron Station.
Sheriff Tim Daugherty says Lawanna Mason Ingle Morton was a part-time deputy who had worked with the sheriff's office for five years. She was found dead at her home.
Her body was discovered shortly after 3 p-m on Monday by her roommate, who had stopped at the home to check on Morton.
Authorities say Morton had been shot, but say they don't know if the home had been broken into, or if a weapon was found.
The sheriff's office says Morton was not on duty at the time. She had been working recently as a courtroom bailiff and had been assigned to the county's detention center before that.
