Some workers at the Smithfield Foods Plant in the Bladen County town of Tar Heel stayed away Monday to protest a company decision not to give them the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a paid day off.
Estimates vary, but some 200 to 400 people among the 2500 scheduled were not at work Monday.
The plant employs about 5000 people and is considered the largest hog processing plant in the world.
