The next time you go to the DMV to renew or receive your license, you won't actually be handed the physical card.

Starting Monday and continuing through the rest of the week -- 14 of eastern Carolina DMV's will be closed a few hours to update to a new "central issuance" system.

Under the new system -- people won't get their license on the spot -- instead it'll be mailed to them.

DMV workers say they hope this will cut down on identity fraud and help with their customers security. They say instead of a physical license customers will get a temporary driving certificate.
Elaine Simpson is with the Greenville DMV office. She says, "Instead of a plastic card they now walk out with, it will be a sheet of paper, 1/2 a page, that is a temporary driving certificate that allows them to drive within 20 days until their card is actually mailed to them"

The North Carolina DMV began phasing in the new program earlier this month. Officials say they expect all DMV offices in the state to have the new system by fall.

Can someone please explain how this will help with identity theft? I think this makes it easier and like it has been stated before in the comments, a huge waste of money that could be going to something much more useful!

Since technically this piece of papaer is a legal document and form of ID (at least for 30 days)can bartenders and wait staff sell beer to those with this paper? How about cigs to people with one? Whoever came up with this system should be fired!

Whose brilliant idea is this? Isn't this costing more money and making ID theft easier? Something smells fishy with this.
