Driving will be treacherous in portions of western North Carolint this morning after a winter storm dumped at least 5 inches of snow on the region.
]The state Highway Patrol says troopers responded to more than 200 calls by late Tuesday evening. In Madison County, the patrol says a head-on collision on N-C 213 killed a 74-year-old woman and hospitalized two others.
Throughout the area, the storm dumped ankle-deep snow at higher elevations, though the National Weather Service says sun and rising temperatures today should melt away snow in most areas.
The weather service says the Allenstand community in Madison County got 4 inches of snow, as did areas west of Robbinsville and Beech Mountain.
Spruce Pine and Newland each received 3 inches of snow Asheville and Waynesville got more than an inch.
