A candidate for House speaker has pulled out of the race. Representative Joe Tolson of Edgecombe County announced this morning that he -didn't- believe he could assemble enough votes to win the nomination when House Democrats meet tomorrow night.
Tolson also says he would throw his support to Joe Hackney of Orange County, the majority leader for the past two years. Tolson also urged the several supporters he counted on to back Hackney as well.
There are four other announced candidates still seeking the nomination. There's former Speaker Dan Blue of Wake County, Jim Crawford of Granville County, Mickey Michaux of Durham County and Drew Saunders of Mecklenburg County.
The winner will be the favorite to become speaker when the General Assembly reconvenes January 24th.
