It's another feathery footnote in the battle of the outlying landing field in Eastern Carolina. Fish and wildlife experts at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife refuge are reporting huge numbers of waterfowl. The refuge covers sections of Washington, Beaufort and Hyde counties. The Navy wants to put a landing field for its jets in this region, and says the birds are no problem. During one observation in December, there were more than 100,000 Tundra Swans and Snow Geese near the Pungo Lake section of the refuge.
