Five members of a Statesville family were killed in a Sunday traffic accident, leaving behind a 13-year-old boy who stayed home.
The state Highway Patrol says the Lopez-Sosa family was about to celebrate the first birthday of the youngest and was headed to a Hickory store to buy plates and cups for the party. Hickory is about 30 miles west of Statesville.
On the way home, just two miles from Statesville, the patrol says the family's 1996 Ford Explorer ran off the left side of U-S 70 near the municipal airport. The S-U-V crashed down a 12-foot embankment, overturned and landed in a creek.
The teenager lost both parents, his 12-year-old and 7-year-old sisters in addition to his 11-month-old brother, whose birthday was Thursday.
The patrol says it was raining at the time, and that the sport utility vehicle was driving too fast for conditions, though it was likely traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
