North Carolina Mourns the Loss of Representative Howard Hunter

Hunter, a Democrat from Hertford County, was elected to a tenth
term in November when he easily defeated Republican Kyle Jones. Hunter represented the northeastern counties of Bertie, Hertford, Gates, and Perquimans
He served as vice chairman of the House Appropriations
Committee. Governor Mike Easley will appoint a replacement to serve
Hunter's two-year term, which began January first. Democratic
leaders from Hunter's district are to recommend his replacement.
Hunter's death comes days before House Democrats are scheduled
to meet to pick a nominee for speaker. The General Assembly
convenes on January 24th.
