State health officials say they are only updating the public on swine flu activity once a week, even though there have now been four deaths confirmed in North Carolina.
Heath & Human Services spokeswoman Carol Schriber says after the first swine flu death they decided to post any subsequent deaths on a state web site that is updated every Wednesday.
But that web site was not updated with the latest deaths, in Wilson & Carteret counties, because of a computer error. "It was supposed to be on there yesterday, but the person who was doing the updating did not update the deaths," Schriber told WITN News.
Schriber says it is up to the local health departments to notify the media about the deaths, if they wished. In both cases that did not happen.
The state says this is the same procedure used for any other similar outbreak.
