There is a nuclear bomb buried in the east, and it's been there for almost 50 years.

Crews at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Wayne County spent months looking for it then just gave up.

Although there is very little chance of the Atomic Bomb Core going off, the fact of the matter is it's still there.

Randy Sauls is a Wayne County historian. He says a B-52 Bomber from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base was doing an airborne alert mission. Training exercises with real live nuclear bombs. The B-52G had a structural failure of its right wing after a leak in a fuel cell. Published reports say the plane came crashing to the ground from 10 thousand feet. Three airmen died while 5 escaped with their lives.

The air force searched for the bomb for about six months. When they couldn't locate it they put an easement on the land. The state of North Carolina according to Randy Sauls comes out every so often and test the ground water to check for radiation.

I seem to remember something about this when I was stationed at Camp LeJeune in the 1960's. All hush-hush then.

The site of this bomb is near my house. It's a pretty big story to us country folks. To my understanding, not only is the bomb buried, but the equipment that the gov't use to try and extract it is all in one big hole and covered with dirt. Many of the older folks that remember this happening could probably walk you right to the spot. Maybe SJAFB should enlist these old timers to find it for them. It's just a neat piece if history for us out here.
