If you plan on driving into downtown Greenville, you may notice a few road blocks.

New safety measures went into effect Thursday night in the downtown Greenville area after a rash of violent crimes.

Greenville police are diverting traffic away from the downtown area with barricades set up from Fifth St. between Washington St. and Reade Circle along with Cotanche St. between Fourth and Reade.

The new plan was supposed to start at 10 p.m. Thursday night. WITN crews were on the scene, and the barricades did not go up at the appointed time. However, they were up by midnight.

Police say the road blocks will be set up from 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Police are also beefing up downtown security with at least 25 patrol officers on foot.

WOW! It's taken us long enough to realize that we actually have to stand up to the crime here in Greenville! Man, it sure has taken us long enough!

Hey I have an idea! How about the GPD stop standing around looking @ the young party girls and do something like actually patrol downtown. How about stopping these underaged youth from loitering on the sidewalks and parking lots. And by the way there is a tactful way of doing this, not everyone has to get their head busted open or hauled off to PCDC to get the message. You know kind of do what us tax payers pay you to do. Use all that high priced training you get in crowd control and public relations, keep that good image in the community.
