An Onslow County woman who is our state's longest-serving elected official is stepping down from her post. Mildred Thomas has been Onslow County's register of deeds for more than 58 years. Thursday, the day after her 94th birthday, she advised county officials that she's retiring. Thomas was hired in the office in 1937. She won her first election in 1948 and hasn't lost one since. The register of deeds office stores and provides information on everything from real estate, marriage licenses to death and birth certificates.
