Dozens of Greenville business owners and local officials gathered Wednesday to talk about how they plan to fight crime downtown.

The meeting, focused on how to improve safety in the area after last Tuesday's shooting that left two people dead.

Greenville Police Chief William Anderson says, "We got different points of views from different individuals and I think that's going to help us with our planning."

More officers are patrolling the downtown area. Additionally, from Wednesday to Saturday, between 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., barricades are going to be set up around downtown so authorities can better control the flow of cars and minimize cruising. Anderson says, "We're going to divert downtown traffic around the downtown area, make it safer and get some of the cars out."

When we spoke to Greenville Police Wednesday, they said some of these new security measures were already taking place. However, when WITN contacted the police department Thursday morning, officials said the barricades were not put up Wednesday night. The crowd was considered too light, an official told WITN.

While Anderson is relying on his staff to step up their crackdowns, he says the community needs to get involved as well. "Law enforcement can't do this by ourselves, we have to have cooperation of bar owners, we have to have cooperation of the community, all of us have to work together, can't do it by ourselves."

Chief Anderson told WITN he's considering contracting with another law enforcement agency to bring additional officers to the area. He also wants to meet with downtown business owners again to educate them about gang attire and what to watch out for.

Great idea Wilma, and after we close downtown how do you expect these bar owners to put food on the table for their families? Last time I checked we are still in a free country and if you operate a legal business the government has no right to tell you that you must close down (well unless you happen to make cars)

WITN: Why hasn't your station investigated or pressed the chief and police dept. on why no charges will be filed against anyone other than Richardson? Eyewitnesses, from my understanding, said there was at least one other person with him. If they just hit a wall and can't find him, that's one thing - but to stop looking and say, 'hey, we're just not going to worry about it' sounds like shoddy police work. Am I missing something in this? They came out and said they were looking but would give no description. Then, Tuesday, they said no charges to be filed - there should be people asking some SERIOUS questions, beginning with the chief and including the mayor. PLEASE dig deep into this story b/c it stinks of either corruption or incompetence and as a citizen of this town, I'd like to know whats going on.

Cactus... u hit the nail on the head. These organizations need to expand there vision to also include denoucing and condemning the actions of the bad apples. While yes there is racism in the world that needs to be battled, you lose credibility when you dont speak out on the negative actions on people within your community. The SCLC needs to start also going into the communities where these youth live who are in the news committing crimes. As long as the youth keep acting up then they stand the possibility of getting mistreated by the justice system. My dad told me to not get into trouble and thats one less thing you have to worry about.
