A Christmas day fire has left an Eastern Carolina man dead, who may not have been able to escape the flames because he was a double amputee.
Authorities say 69 year-old Carlton Eugene Sawyer was found dead inside his burning home on Highway 343 in South Mills, Camden County on Monday afternoon. Family members believe he tried to escape, but was unable to as he was missing both legs. They say his body was found just inside the front door. Family members say Carlton had just lost his wife last month. He operated Sawyer's grocery store right next door to his house for the past thirty years. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
