Greenville police say a reward being offered for the capture of double murder suspect James Richardson will not be handed out.
Last week police offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to Richardson's arrest. But Corporal Kip Gaskins told WITN News that since Richardson turned himself in Saturday to police the reward will not be paid.
Richardson is accused in last Tuesday's double murder of Landon Blackley, an ECU student, and Andrew Kirby, a downtown restaurant manager, in front of The Other Place nightclub on East 5th Street.
The ECU Student Government Association is planning an anti-violence march and candlelight vigil Tuesday. That starts at The Other Place at 7:00 p.m. and end at the cupola on the university mall.
ONLY ON WITN: Mother Speaks Out
The man charged with the double murder of two men outside of a nightclub in Greenville is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday. James Richardson surrendered to police Saturday. And for the first time, his mother, Dorothy Richardson is speaking out, explaining her outrage at the Greenville Police Chief.
"My son turned himself in. He called me, and I convinced him to do that. And if you look in the paper, you see the chief of police, someone we trust, would get on the news and tell a lie," Dorothy Richardson said.
James Richardson appeared before a Pitt County district court judge Monday morning who set the man's bond at $5,000,000.
The murder suspect's mother came to the WITN studio Sunday night surrounded by family, she says, to set the record straight. Her son James Richardson has been charged with murder in the deaths of Andrew Kirby and Landon Blackley. Dorothy Richardson says she convinced her son to turn himself in Saturday, and it had little to due with the Greenville Police Department. She says Greenville Police Chief William Anderson has it wrong saying that several law enforcement agencies led to her son's capture.
Richardson also rails against the chief for calling her son a "dangerous man."
"How many others has he done this to? How many other mothers, it doesn't matter what color, but how many other people has Mr. Anderson convicted before they were tried?" Richardson said.
Richardson says her son waited five days to turn himself in because he was scared. She says L.J. told her he was innocent but they never discussed what really happened that night.
Although Richardson and the family are adamant that James Richardson is not guilty, she says she feels for the families who lost their loved ones.
"My heart goes out to the grieving family of the young people that lost their lives. My prayers go out to them," Richardson said.
James Richardson has his next court date on July 22nd.
Previous Story
Greenville - Double murder suspect James Richardson claims he is innocent according to Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Rufus Huggins.
Huggins told WITN's Michael Baldwin that he was given a note at a 4th of July party earlier in the day stating that Richardson wanted to surrender to police. Part of the deal to surrender was that Richardson had a chance to say goodbye to his family before turning himself in according to Huggins.
Richardson requested that Huggins accompany he and his mother to the police station which he did at 5pm on Saturday.
Huggins gave no further details as to what Richardson's role was on the night that claimed the lives of two men outside a Greenville nightclub.
Richardson has been charged with two counts of murder and is being held at the Pitt County Detention center without bond.

Oh my gosh! I was thinking the same thing. My husband's friend is named Tyrone and when he lived here, I used to sing that song to him all the time. Really, Tyrone, you should consider sharing your story with young people. Your honesty is very refreshing and I fully believe that you could save some of our young people by doing some public speaking.

You better call Tyrone, but you can't use my phone.
