A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7am on Saturday for Beaufort, Mainland Hyde, Martin, Outer Banks Dare, Tyrrell, Washington and western Dare County. The threats are black ice and slick roadways.
Carolinians will hit the road in record numbers this year, with more than 1.62 million North Carolinians and nearly 796,000 South Carolinians driving more than 50 miles from home this holiday season, a 3.7 percent increase over last year, according to pre-holiday surveys. It is the fourth straight year for an increase in holiday auto travel.
The Southeast United States is expected to produce the largest number of motorists and air travelers, with about 13.8 million auto travelers and 2.7 million expected to fly. More than 321,000 North Carolinians and 157,000 South Carolinians have plans for air travel during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.
