An update to our story on the Jasmine Trail nudist resort in Pamlico County that allows kids.
A day after our story, the pictures on the campground website showing naked kids have been removed.
Pamlico County District Attorney Scott Thomas said his office and the FBI are both looking at the campground and the website.
WITN started looking into Jasmine Trail after a school psychologist, whose interests include naturism and social nudism, and whose online profile includes Jasmine Trail, was arrested and charged with taking nude photos of a boy.
You can read more about that on my news blog.
ORIGINAL STORY:
District Attorney Scott Thomas says his office and the F.B.I are looking into a Pamlico County campground where kids are naked with adults, and the campground's website that shows pictures of naked kids.
Officials with the Jasmine Trail Nudist Campground near Grantsboro refused an on camera interview. They referred us to the American Association for Nude Recreation, of which the campground is a member.
American Association for Nude Recreation spokeswoman, Carolyn Hawkins, says there is nothing inappropriate, lewd, sexual, or perverted about what's going on. "Having a child at a nudist resort...It's just one of the, in my opinion, one of the greatest things that I've ever done in my life. My children, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren are all nudists."
Thomas says his office is looking into whether any state laws like indecent exposure or exploitation are being broken. He's also asked the FBI to take a look at the Jasmine Trail website and advertisements to see if any federal laws are being violated.
Another big concern is the possibility that places like Jasmine Trail could attract pedophiles. Thomas says, "When you have children involved and children being exposed to other adults and certainly other adults not even related and they're there with no clothes on it certainly, in my mind, raises a security issue and safety issue for the child."
Hawkins says all AANR resorts are safe and that procedures are in place to protect kids and adults, but wouldn't go into detail saying, "We do have a screening process and I don't want to reveal something that's confidential. Each club has its own screening process and I don't always know what that process is at each individual club."
While it is the job of the Department of Social Services to, in part, look after the well being of children, Pamlico County Human Services, or D.S.S. director, Bob Johnson, says Jasmine Trail has remained off the radar with no complaints. But what about kids who may not want to be there and are reluctant to speak out against their parents? Johnson says, "We would have to look at the area from the standpoint of neglect and I think it would be a very easy case to prove."
Thomas says he intends to ask state lawmakers and consult with the Attorney General's office on legislation that would place an age restriction on nudist facilities in North Carolina.
Nudists disagree with legislation that would keep minors out of nudist resorts. Hawkins says, "I think that when you have a family club and you have a family that families should be able to raise their children the way they want to."

Do what you want, but I don't want to see your mess flopping around. As for your kids, they should make the choice to be nudists. Put them in clothing like a normal person until they make the decision to run around naked. No matter what you want to do, they may not be comfortable with the nudist ideas.
it just blows my mind... you think these people go to look at each other, not true. It's about freedom, having fun, and nothing left to hide. These kids are having fun, not looking at adults. I for one think dressing to impress is a crock. So is makeup and pretending to be someone you aren't. I am a nudist. When I was three I naturally took my clothes off and mom had to chase me down the street to put them back on. NC and the Bible belt in particular is full of people who love to run other people's lives from mostly a standpoint of intense fears. I refuse to make decisions based on fear. I raised my kid to be a nudist, it is a natural state of being.
More people goes to these parks so you are probably right. But percentage wise might be a different story. No need to blog when there is no way to every prove or disprove either theory.
