An update to our story on the Jasmine Trail nudist resort in Pamlico County that allows kids.
A day after our story, the pictures on the campground website showing naked kids have been removed.
Pamlico County District Attorney Scott Thomas said his office and the FBI are both looking at the campground and the website.
WITN started looking into Jasmine Trail after a school psychologist, whose interests include naturism and social nudism, and whose online profile includes Jasmine Trail, was arrested and charged with taking nude photos of a boy.
You can read more about that on my news blog.
ORIGINAL STORY:
District Attorney Scott Thomas says his office and the F.B.I are looking into a Pamlico County campground where kids are naked with adults, and the campground's website that shows pictures of naked kids.
Officials with the Jasmine Trail Nudist Campground near Grantsboro refused an on camera interview. They referred us to the American Association for Nude Recreation, of which the campground is a member.
American Association for Nude Recreation spokeswoman, Carolyn Hawkins, says there is nothing inappropriate, lewd, sexual, or perverted about what's going on. "Having a child at a nudist resort...It's just one of the, in my opinion, one of the greatest things that I've ever done in my life. My children, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren are all nudists."
Thomas says his office is looking into whether any state laws like indecent exposure or exploitation are being broken. He's also asked the FBI to take a look at the Jasmine Trail website and advertisements to see if any federal laws are being violated.
Another big concern is the possibility that places like Jasmine Trail could attract pedophiles. Thomas says, "When you have children involved and children being exposed to other adults and certainly other adults not even related and they're there with no clothes on it certainly, in my mind, raises a security issue and safety issue for the child."
Hawkins says all AANR resorts are safe and that procedures are in place to protect kids and adults, but wouldn't go into detail saying, "We do have a screening process and I don't want to reveal something that's confidential. Each club has its own screening process and I don't always know what that process is at each individual club."
While it is the job of the Department of Social Services to, in part, look after the well being of children, Pamlico County Human Services, or D.S.S. director, Bob Johnson, says Jasmine Trail has remained off the radar with no complaints. But what about kids who may not want to be there and are reluctant to speak out against their parents? Johnson says, "We would have to look at the area from the standpoint of neglect and I think it would be a very easy case to prove."
Thomas says he intends to ask state lawmakers and consult with the Attorney General's office on legislation that would place an age restriction on nudist facilities in North Carolina.
Nudists disagree with legislation that would keep minors out of nudist resorts. Hawkins says, "I think that when you have a family club and you have a family that families should be able to raise their children the way they want to."

Do you all really think that because a child is covered with clothing that they are safe from perverts? There seems to be a large problem of children being molested in a clothed society. Perhaps if the pediophiles had been raised in a nudist family they wouldn't have become pediophiles . The thing to me is that the nudity in question is in a family context and environment. The children are closely monitored and protected, apparently far more so than in our school systems and churches. They have to be, because of the circumstances. I am in full agreement with xoxo.
we look at images from the rain forest, or the plains in Africa of young children naked, of women sucking children to their breasts, of men with either a small loin cloth or nothing,,and think nothing...that is how they have been for centuries..our culture has debased what the body is to be seen as..and I am no right wing holy roller ( thank God)...but it is true, God didn't care that A&E were naked..he asked them "who told you were naked?"...our body is our temple of our soul..which makes me wonder why people are fat, smoke, drink, do drugs, have eating disorders, etc...guess they don't like the temple...if the nudist are doing no harm leave them be...go after the fat drug addicts, pushers, drunks, etc....
you should REALLY read the bible before you give wrong information. God did not demand that bodies to be covered otherwise Adam & Eve would have never been nude to start with. They clothed themselves when they sinned realizing that they were nude and that it all of the sudden seemed wrong to them so they sewed fig leaves together to make aprons Gen. 3:7 When God called to him he hid because of his nudity and when asked he told God why he hid. God asked who told him that he was nude.
