Police in Brevard have charged an 18-year-old man with second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's 3-month-old daughter.
Deandre Curry was originally charged with felony child abuse after doctors found the 3-month-old suffered a fractured skull and showed symptoms of shaken baby syndrome. Authorities say initial blood tests found marijuana and antidepressants in her blood.
Brevard Police Chief Dennis Wilde says Curry is being held in the Transylvania County jail without bond.
Paramedics responded to a 911 call Thursday night at an apartment complex and found the next-door neighbor trying to resuscitate Aundrea Hunter. The baby was declared dead early Sunday afternoon, and her body is to be taken to Bowman-Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem today for an autopsy.
Wilde says the baby's mother, identified as Stacey Hunter, has not been charged with any crimes. Hunter and Curry shared the apartment, but he's not the child's father.
