The stepmother of a 13-year-old boy who died last year after being tied to a tree has pleaded guilty.
Sandra McMillan entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder in an Edgecombe County courtroom. An Alford plea is when a person pleads guilty and maintains their innocence, but admits there's enough evidence to find them guilty.
A judge sentenced her to serve between 13 and 16-1/2 years in prison.
Earlier this month McMillan's husband, Brice McMillan, also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for his testimony against his wife. He was sentenced Monday to serve just under 10-1/2 years to 13-1/4 years in prison.
Tyler McMillan died last summer, according to an autopsy from dehydration and heat stroke.

Mickie McMillan loved her husband and sons: when she died, the grief was unbearable for them. Sandra was no substitute for Michelle. Tyler died protecting Ryan, for grieving for his mother. Brice was misled with tales of disobedience. Sandra worked hard to separate Brice from his parents, siblings, friends, and his church. Grief over Michelle, fear of failing in the 2nd marriage, enabled Sandra to warp Brice's perceptions. Many of you, readers, ask why not go to the police earlier. The crafty wife controlled husband and children with fear: they could not dare reveal her evil treatment of these beautiful boys of Michelle and Brice. That is why she compelled the move away from Belvoir: it was too hard to cover her heinous punishment of these little boys under the watchful eyes of family and friends. Misguided Biblical references enabled her to use the rod to drive the disobedience and disrespect, of her, from these children of God. An innocent child died; her punishment is yet to come.
