State troopers say they will not charge an Onslow County deputy sheriff who wrecked his cruiser Sunday night.

The Highway Patrol says Deputy Charles Crites was responding to a call at the Exxon station in Sneads Ferry when he came around a curve and ran off the road into a ditch.

Sheriff Ed Brown says it happened around 9:30 p.m. on Old Folkstone Road in Sneads Ferry. Brown says the patrol car received minor damage and the deputy was not injured.

Troopers tell WITN News that they estimate the 25-year-old deputy was going about 45 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.

Brown says his department will conduct an internal investigation into the accident.

Exceeding a safe speed! my friend got a ticket from the HP for exceeding a safe speed when his car skidded off the road due to hydroplaning and was going under the speed limit. This story gives me even less respect for some of these officers that hide behind a badge.

Will he get a ticket if found to be speeding. Or a careless and wreckless? Also, if he was chasing a suspect and damaged the patrol car, the suspect would have to pay for it.Therefore if he is found to be negligent, he should also have to pay for damaging the counties property.
