DA In Student Shooting Meets With State Lawyers On Indictment

New Hanover County's top prosecutor is meeting with senior state lawyers after an indictment was rescinded against a sheriff's deputy accused of shooting an unarmed teenager.

A spokeswoman with the Department of Justice says District Attorney Ben David came to Raleigh to meet with lawyers in the attorney general's special prosecutions section.

On Monday, the district attorney announced at a packed news conference that former New Hanover deputy sheriff Christopher Long had been indicted for second-degree murder in the shooting death of Peyton Strickland. He and a friend were suspected of stealing two PlayStation 3 video game systems.

But the grand jury foreman told a Superior Court judge on Tuesday that he mistakenly checked the wrong box on the indictment form. The judge said in an order changing the indictment form that the foreman learned of his error when other grand jury members heard in the news media that Long had been charged.
