Autopsies performed Tuesday show a South Carolina couple traveling to New York City to visit family drowned after their car went off Interstate 95 and sank in six to eight feet of dark, murky water in Rocky Mount.
The bodies of Wayne and Dianne Guay of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, were recovered Monday from their sedan in a body of water near Rocky Mount.
ECU spokesman Doug Boyd says blunt force injury due to a car crash was listed as an additional cause of death for Wayne Guay. The autopsies were performed by a university faculty member at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
The couple was expected to leave early Thursday morning and arrive that night. Relatives became concerned when calls to the couple's cell phone went straight to voice mail.
The Guays' sunken Mazda 3 was spotted Monday near milepost 140 by a Department of Transportation contractor working on a nearby bridge.
