Bear Season Opens Back Up on Monday

Hopefully it will warm up a bit before another round of hunting starts Monday in parts of Eastern Carolina.

It's the second window for bear hunting. The season includes Beaufort, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Jones, Pamlico, Tyrrell, Washington, Bertie, Martin and other northeast counties. Most of those counties also had bear hunting opportunities in November as well. Boar hunting also starts Monday, but most boars are located in the western part of our state.

That's not the case with the black bear. There are an estimated seven thousand black bears in Eastern North Carolina, about 11,000 total in our state. According to wildlife officials, our state has a strong bear hunting heritage dating back to colonial times. Bears were used for food, and hides to feed and clothe the early colonists families. And here's a bear fact you might now have known. Bears found on North Carolina's coast normally weigh more than bears from our mountains. Experts say that's because of abundant crops and more stable food resources.
