A winter weather advisory has been issued for all of eastern Carolina except Carteret, Onslow, and Duplin counties from 6pm Thursday through 4am Friday. Light freezing rain and sleet will be possible.
Military officials confirmed Wednesday that a North Carolina-based soldier died in Iraq. The Department of Defense says Lance Corporal Thomas Echols, of Shepherdsville, Kentucky, died Monday in combat. He was assigned to the First Battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment, Second Marine Division, Second Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Lejeune. Echols' family says he was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. His grandfather said Echols' wife is expecting the couple's first child in April. The military also confirmed Wednesday that a North Carolina-based sailor was killed in action in Iraq. Hospitalman Christopher Anderson of Longmont, Colorado, died Monday in Anbar Province. Anderson was a corpsman assigned to the First Battalion, Sixth Marines, Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune.
