Onslow County residents will now see a property tax increase.

Hundreds turned out Monday night in Jacksonville to the board of commissioners meeting to voice their opinion on several proposed cuts, including the elimination of sheriff deputies, closing libraries and parks and rec programs.

Public comment opposing those cuts dominated the evening. In the end, the commissioners voted to adopt the original $155 million dollar budget and a 8.7 cent property tax increase for citizens without the additional cuts.

The county cut more than 70 positions in May. The county said it needed to make up 10 million dollars, and could either raise taxes or cut further programs and more county jobs.

The current tax rate is 50.3 cents per $100 valuation. The new rate will be 59 cents per $100 valuation.

I think its a shame that the county uses scare tactics such as closing libraries, cutting programs to get their tax increase. Many county employees would go along with pay or hour cuts. Did we really need a new City Hall, sidewalks?? MOre people who cannot afford higher taxes and insurance will lose their homes. Thank you Commissioners!!

Wait until 2010 and they appraise your property values again. I will guess (guarentee) property values will go up, why can't they tighten up their belts along with everyone else and make do with what they have.

I'm so glad that people think little league is more important than people being able to support themselves. *sarcasm definitely intended*
