The 2009 Washington Summer Festival is underway.
The 26th annual festival is organized by the Washington Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce. It kicked off Friday and continues Saturday along the Washington waterfront.
Some of the festival highlights include food, arts and crafts, amusements, bands and fireworks.

Wow yall are unbelievable i mean okay i know its drunks and stuff like that out there but its not bad... I mean im 14 and i love goin out there even at music in the streets,and yall dont know wat yall our talkin about, i mean yea some of them fight, but its not our fault, if we were raised the right way,we wouldnt want to fight as much. And if our parents actually cared about us, we would atually be good. I mean we aint perfect, give us a break... and if the cops werent so scared of gettin hurt (well some cops) they would stop it. But wat some of them did was just looked at the people in the middle that was gettin ready to fight and just looked at them. I mean even though nothin happened they still should of broke it up and seperated them before some of us kids got hurt...

The summer festival is a joke, it does not benefit the city at all, it costs the city money every year, if the Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event why isn't the summer festival held in other locations of the county, like Belhaven, Aurora, Chocowinity, I was down there a last year at the festival and at night it was nothing but fights and drunks, the police have their hands full, by the way who is paying the police the City or the Chamber.

"Disgusted" - FYI, the Summer Festival is NOT a 'City' event as you stated. It never has been. It is put on by the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber collects the fees from the vendors to be there and the Chamber is running the beer garden. The Chamber would be responsible under NC Dram Shop law for the behavior of the patrons. I always wondered how this festival supposedly brings in so much money for the community when almost every vendor is from out of town and alot from out of state. They live in campers, bring their own food and take their profits back home with them. I think they should be made to buy a license to operate a business within the City like all the other businesses here do. Lets not even talk about the manhours spent on public safety and electric Department rewiring things down there every year.
